The village of ROSTOS is a small Portuguese village with very friendly people.  It has a Church, a local bar, a shop, a school, and a Post Office.  There is a Chicken Restaurant in the village run by Fernando who is only too willing to help you with your Portuguese although he doesn't speak a word of English.  But he will understand all that you want.
The Post Office, opposite the house, also has a cafe that will cook things like omelettes etc. if you so require.
They have the Internet there too if you want to keep in touch whilst you are on your holidays.  The girls in the post office and cafe are lovely and very friendly and some can even speak a small amount of English.

CALDAS DA RAINHA is a very big town just a few miles away and has supermarkets, DIY places, an everyday market in the town square selling produce, flowers, baskets, pottery etc.  The shops here are out of this world and for the ladies, there are shoe shops in abundance.  The shopping area is mostly pedestrianised and makes it very easy to walk about there.  Just remember that most shops close from 1.00pm to 3.00pm.  The cafes do stay open so you can have a relaxed lunch, read the papers and just generally 'chill out'

There is also another gypsy type market every Monday in Caldas where everything is sold including live poultry, rabbits and birds etc.  This is a very flamboyant market and worth a visit just to see the real Portuguese at their best
